I used to think I was in pretty good shape. My husband and I were avid hikers and backpackers, played a lot of tennis and did a lot of roller blading. And then I got to college- graduate school, actually. And then we got full time jobs…and starting trying for a family. Fertility drugs entered the picture, and I was so out of shape.
It was about this time that my husband picked up running. One day he was like “oh, by the way, I’m running a half marathon tomorrow”. And so it was race after race. I learned to love to be a spectator. I made signs, cheered him on, and encouraged him to run more.
Fast forward a few years, we are in another new place, and I’m a stay at home mom. I had a lot of friends and we were always doing fun things, but something was missing. I didn’t have an outlet, something that was just for me, that relieved some stress. And then my church offered a couch to 5K group and I joined it on a whim. And learned that I loved to run! I ran a few 5K’s, an 8K, and then a half marathon!
Hank Aaron State Trail 5K was my first race- it was the race the group did together at the end of the Couch to 5K program.
We went to Pittsburgh for Thanksgiving so I signed up for the Turkey Trot there. Holy HILLS! I was used to the flat runs in Wisconsin, so those hills were killer!
My friend started the Moms RUN This Town for our city and was given 2 free entires into the Dirty Girl 5K obstacle run, so we did that and had a lot of fun getting dirty!
As of right now, this is the last race I have done- my half marathon 🙂
After the half marathon, I found out I was pregnant with Red2. I ran through 28 weeks pregnant with her. But then I had some complications and had to stop so that she could stay put until she was ready.
And now I’m working back up to a half marathon. On my new treadmill 🙂
